Background Statement

In 1966, North Florida Junior College's (NFJC) first president Dr. Marshall Hamilton invited Louis O. Gravely Jr. to speak to a group at Madison. Mr. Gravely was an attorney in Ocala and Trustee of the Central Florida Junior College Foundation.  At the meeting, Mr. Gravely gave information in regards to NFJC starting a Foundation.  Interest was generated by those in attendance to start the NFJC Endowment, Inc.  Dr. Hamilton cited the need for funds to supplement the already received governmental funds for scholarships, equipment, facilities, and other such items to assist the student and the College in its operations. He stated that the NFJC Endowment, Inc. would be a vehicle through which individuals or groups could give money for educational purposes.

The Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws were adopted on October 27, 1966.  At the same meeting, the Board of  Directors were elected.  The original Directors elected are as follows, Van H. Priest (Chair), A.P. Nott (Vice-Chair), William B. Clark,  Wilder Chapman, Rev. William Harris, Cecil Kennedy, Dewey Mills, Hazel Richards, Eythel Richardson, Richard Simpson, Madison Smith, Claude Tompkins, Carl Bevis, Mildred Parrish (Secretary-Treasurer) and Dr. William Hamilton (College President).  On March 8, 1967, the Corporation was awarded tax exempt status by the U.S. Treasury Department, Internal Revenue Service.

Since the early development, the Foundation has had a primary goal to raise money to support the students and the college. Today, NFCC President John Grosskopf emphasizes the need for continued growth in the Foundation. Along with the District Board of Trustees, he recognizes the need of our communities and the importance of education through NFCC.  President Grosskopf is committed to the success of the NFCC Foundation in its goals to provide financial assistance to the college.  By working together, we can all help to make our student's dreams a reality.
